Chicago: July 2011
On July 16, 2011, our team flew into Chicago's Midway
Airport, and drove a short distance to Munster, Indiana, where 21 of us
shared an "cozy" 4-bedroom, lower level (more commonly
referred to as a basement) home. That served as our base, as we sent out
three construction teams that week to repair homes that had been damaged
by Hurricane Ike in 2008. Hanging doors, laying floors, putting up
sheetrock, painting, etc., was how they spent their week. Our fourth
team, made up of 12-15 year olds, served the community through the local
ARC Center, The Salvation Army in East Chicago, and the Community
Environmental Center. Despite the 100 degree mid-week temperatures, we
managed to squeeze in some fun in Chicago, posing in front of the
"Bean" in Millennium Park, pigging out on deep-dish Pizza at
Paizano's, and a taking an evening cruise up the Chicago River from Navy
Pier!
What a beautiful city, a GREAT TEAM, and an awesome
trip!
